Profusion of Brocade is a textile-based soft sculpture that engages in a profound dialogue between memory, materiality, and cultural metaphor through a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional embroidered fragment from the Chaoshan region, dating to the 1980s.
The work utilizes a vintage cotton-linen embroidery as its foundation—a mundane object once draped over televisions, pianos, and sofas. This textile embodies the visual aspirations of Chinese women during the early Reform and Opening-Up period, its patterns blending Chinese motifs with an imitation of French lace, making it a microcosm of cultural interchange.
Artistically, the application of acrylic foaming agent creates a solidified, relief-like texture, subverting the inherent softness of the fabric. Encased within transparent resin, the embroidery is transformed into an archaeological specimen. Dark, natural stones pierce through the textile surface like tenacious mineralized nodules growing stubbornly from its historical weave, from which black resin seems to seep, evoking both congealed temporal flow and the silent exudation of life's toll.
The integration of illuminated, branch-like forms introduces a visual counterpoint of fragility against the stones' resilience. This juxtaposition metaphorically alludes to the obscured fortitude and quiet sacrifices inherent in the traditional female endeavor of weaving life's beauty. The work thus transcends the mere conversion of a folk artifact into a contemporary installation; through its material interventions, it reveals the stark truths underlying glorious brocade—that every vision of flourishing prosperity is rooted in silent, enduring perseverance.
