Project description
Beauty For Sale is an installation centered on feminist consciousness. Through the transformation of everyday objects, the work examines how women's bodies are shaped, judged, and disciplined by the intertwined forces of patriarchy and consumer culture.
The installation features a series of birdcages suspended overhead, each containing a pair of women's high heels. While birdcages symbolize confinement, high heels have long represented socially constructed ideals of feminine beauty. Together, they suggest that what is imprisoned is not merely an object, but the physical and psychological constraints imposed upon women through gender expectations.
The elevated cages require viewers to look upward, turning the exhibition space into a symbolic marketplace where women are displayed, observed, and evaluated. As visitors move among the cages, they become participants in a system of looking that reflects the social mechanisms through which women's value is assigned. The title, Beauty for Sale, encapsulates this central idea: women, like commodities, are placed within public space, waiting for the gaze of others to assign them value.
Rather than criticizing high heels themselves, the work invites viewers to question who defines beauty and who determines a woman's value. Ultimately, it suggests that what needs to be liberated is not the birdcage, but the invisible social structures that continue to confine women's bodies, identities, and agency.
