Project description

This necklace「Song of Iridescent Feathers」draws its inspiration from the Taiwan Barbet, an endemic bird species known for its vibrant and dazzling plumage. Its brilliant colors embody the vitality of nature and symbolize Taiwan’s spirit of diversity, inclusiveness, and freedom. Birds are often associated with liberty, and the striking hues of the Taiwan Barbet echo the harmonious coexistence and cultural richness of Taiwanese society.

The main body is crafted from titanium alloy. The design begins with digital illustration, followed by metal powder 3D printing technology to form the bird’s silhouette. After meticulous hand-finishing and polishing, the piece is heated with an open flame, allowing the titanium surface to naturally oxidize into an iridescent spectrum—capturing the vivid essence and lively spirit of the Taiwan Barbet.

For the feathers and eyes, the artist selected Taiwan’s distinctive natural chalcedony, volcanic hair stone, and coral jasper, creating a vivid palette and a warm, organic texture. Each raw stone was hand-cut, polished, and inlaid into the bird’s body as eye and wing embellishments. The tail features tricolor jade beads, adding a sense of movement, elegance, and layered visual depth.

This work fuses traditional Taiwanese gemstone craftsmanship with refined metalworking, while integrating cutting-edge metal powder 3D printing technology , showing Taiwan’s cultural values of diversity, freedom, and innovation.
